Caging Skies, by Christine Leunens
This is the book one of my favorite movies in recent years is based on, JoJo Rabbit. I love the movie, and I might love the book even more. It's difficult to compare, because the two are so different. The movie takes the general idea of the book and does its own thing; the book is far more serious, more adult, and lacks the satire and humor of the movie (no running through the woods with imaginary best-friend Adolf). By reading the book, you get a much deeper and more adult take on the mind of a Nazi zealot. As a result, the protagonist's actions come across as more brutal and unforgivable. I find myself wanting to yell at him, "Stop doing that!" which in my mind is a tell-tale sign of a great read.
